Monroe woman scammed by men she met on Match.com

A Monroe County woman is the victim of an apparent fraud case.

State police at Fern Ridge said on Sept. 23 a 74-year-old woman from Effort, Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, arrived at the barracks and reported she has been in communication with two men that she met on “Match.com” since July 22, 2019.

She said she sent the first man a cashier’s check for $24,000 because he told her that he could make her a lot of money with that small contribution. She said she sent the second man money in the form of Bitcoin. When she woke up the next day, she found an extra $34,890 in her bank account. She told troopers that she took $24,466 and sent it to the second man in different denominations of Bitcoin.

The state police report lists the stolen items as a cashier’s check for $24,000 and cash taken from a bank account of $25,466. The investigation is continuing, troopers added.
