Man involved in Lansford standoff enters guilty pleas

A Carbon County man involved in a standoff with police in Lansford last May, which lasted nearly 10 hours, entered guilty pleas to charges stemming from that incident, plus in two other pending cases.

Brad Robert Simpson, 40, of Lansford, appeared via video conference from the county prison to enter his pleas before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

In the standoff case, Simpson pleaded guilty to one count each of possession of a firearm prohibitive, a felony 2; and misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest. In exchange for the pleas the district attorney’s office dropped two felony counts of aggravated assault.

The standoff occurred on May 2 when Lansford police were dispatched to the 300 block of West Snyder Avenue, for an unwanted person. On scene, officers entered the home and found Simpson inside, holding a firearm in a threatening manner toward police. Police ordered him to drop the weapon but refused. Officers then exited the residence for safety reasons. Before leaving, shots were filed by the officers, it was stated.

District Attorney Michael S. Greek told the court the initial report that Simpson had fired shots at the officers were dismissed after a ballistics report indicated the gun Simpson had that day had not been fired as first reported.

Simpson also entered a guilty plea to one count of unauthorized use of an automobile filed for an incident reported on Aug. 21, 2019, to Lansford police by a neighbor of Simpson. He was arrested operating the vehicle by state police at a location of Monroe County. The vehicle owner, a neighbor of Simpson’s, said she didn’t give him permission to use the vehicle. He also pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana filed for an incident on Dec. 4, 2019, also filed by Lansford police.

In June, Simpson pleaded to one count of institutional vandalism for an incident on Dec. 6, 2019, at the county correctional facility in Nesquehoning.

Nesquehoning police were called to the prison for a man who damaged property at the jail. Police said while Simpson was in one of the booking rooms at the prison he damaged a bench by pulling it out of the floor where it was anchored. Sentencing in that case was deferred because of pending cases, the three he entered pleas to on Thursday.

Nanovic deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
