Driver to be charged with DUI after hitting building in Franklin

A Schuylkill County driver is facing a charge of driving under the influence following a crash in Carbon County.

State police at Lehighton said the incident occurred 12:28 p.m. on Sept. 6 along Fairyland Road in Franklin Township. Troopers said Richard W. Burkhardt, 51, of New Ringgold, was driving a 2018 Hyundai Tucson when it left the road and struck a building and then a fence next to the building.

Troopers said before the crash they had been dispatched to Route 248 in an attempt to locate a vehicle that was observed being driven erratically. Troopers said it was determined that Burkhardt was driving eastbound on Fairyland Road at a speed to fast for conditions when he lost control. The vehicle left the road and struck a building and fence next to the building.

Burkhardt was injured and not wearing a seat belt. He taken to St. Luke’s Hospital-Lehighton campus, by Lehighton ambulance. Troopers said he showed signs of impairment from a controlled substance and that his license was under suspension - DUI related. Charges to be filed.

Troopers were also assisted by volunteers from the Franklin Township Fire Company. The vehicle was towed.
