Wreckers, Fillies remain unbeaten

The dominance by the Weatherly boys’ cross country team this fall just seems to keep rolling right along.

It was evident once again on Thursday at Marian, where the Wreckers hardly broke a good sweat in streaking to a sweep over three Divisional II teams to remain unbeaten.

The Wreckers (6-0) ran past host Marian 17-37, Mahanoy Area 21-49 and Gillingham Charter, 15-50, with Mahanoy and Marian also posting shutouts over the Wolfpack.

The same could be said for the Marian girls, who bested Mahanoy (23-32), Weatherly (21-34) and Gillingham Charter (15-50) to stay undefeated.

The loss was the first for the Marian boys, who came into the meet with a 2-0 record. The Colts did pick up two more wins despite the first loss of the season at the hands of Weatherly. The Colts were impressive downing Mahanoy Area 15-50.

One of District 11’s best runners, Weatherly’s Scotty Zoscin, took the lead at the gun and never looked back in racing to the finish line with a time of 17:59 to win the boys’ race. He was followed by teammates Jacob Porter (18:21) and Frankie Willis (18:24) in a sweep of the top three spots.

The only interruption at the top was by Marian’s Gavin Vercusky who placed fourth overall with a time of 19:01. The next two spots also belonged to Weatherly with Mike Burger (19:02) and Rich Roy (19:10) giving the Wreckers five of the top six runners in the race.

“It was a good day to run,” said Zoscin, about the afternoon that saw temperatures in the low 70s and little breeze. “I wasn’t pushing myself, but I kept looking for where my boys were … they were right there behind me. It was a nice run.”

The Wreckers have been pushing since the summer and entered yesterday’s meet having already beat possible division contender Shenandoah earlier this season.

“The main goal for me personally is the leagues. I’ve finished second twice there,” said Zoscin. “As a team, definitely districts. A couple days ago we got Shenandoah, and they were ranked first in the district and we were ranked fourth.”

In the girls meet, the Fillies came up huge to stay unbeaten. Marian came into the meet with a 1-0 record, trailing Mahanoy Area, which won its first three meets, in the Division II standings.

The 1-2 punch of Maddie Dando and Grace Curnow enabled the Fillies to breeze past their competition. Dando, a standout swimmer for Marian, has made a splash in her first season with the cross country team.

Dando finished second overall to veteran Maddison Quick of Mahanoy Area. Quick nailed down a time of 22:05 to place first, while Dando hit the finish line in a time of 22:38, seven seconds better than Curnow, who was third.

Weatherly’s Danielle Gordon (22:48) and teammate Kendall Gerhart (23:33) were impressive considering the lack of runners in the Wreckers’ camp with just four on the roster.

Both Marian coach Justin Huegel and Weatherly coach Ryan Kately liked what they saw from their teams.

“I thought we did pretty well,” said the Colts’ Justin Huegel. “The good news is there is room for improvement. I liked the way both our boys and girls continue to want to get better. Each week we want to get better and work to that championship season.”

Kately echoed that sentiment.

“We’ve worked hard all summer, and it’s fun to get out and race other teams,” Kately said. “We want to take it one meet at a time and not get ahead of ourselves and just race who is in front of us.”

OTHER COLTS ...

In the boys meet, Marian had a strong group of runners right behind Weatherly’s domination at the top. The Colts picked up positions seven-through-10 thanks to strong runs by Kevin Early (19:30), Llama Sanphy (20:05), John Malarkey (20:07 and Albin Petschouser (20:24).

FILLIES IN FIRST

... The sweep by the Marian girls improved its record to 4-0. The loss to the Fillies dropped Mahanoy Area to to 5-1.

OTHER TOP GIRLS

... Finishing sixth was Mahanoy’s Keylee Seagler, while Marian’s Isa Genao (24:57), Emily Ashfield (25:00) and Haley Curnow (26:23) were piling up big points at seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively. Gllingham Charter’s Karen Holbert added a top-10 finish in ninth.
