Schuylkill Courthouse reopens after transformer replaced

The Schuylkill County Courthouse reopened Thursday after it closed early Wednesday to replace a transformer.

PPL Electric Utilities Corp. began doing the necessary work to replace the transformer that Donald Adams, building superintendent, said has been on site for “close to 30 years.”

Paul Fetterolf, director of public works for the county, said the old transformer was replaced and the new one operational by 3 p.m. Wednesday.

He said the leak from the transformer started a little more than a month ago. What appears to be oil stain was noticeable around the base of the transformer.

Kevin Stanton, a substation electrician with PPL, said he didn’t expect any glitches with the installation. The primary side of the transformer is 12,470 volts while the secondary side is 480.

Workers were disconnecting and replacing fuses on an electric line before installing the transformer.
