Walnutport police department receives new Explorer

Walnutport Police Department has welcomed the newest addition to its fleet of vehicles.

The department recently took possession of a brand-new 2020 Ford Explorer, according to borough police Chief Pete Wayda.

Wayda said the vehicle came from Kovatch Ford in Nesquehoning, adding that it replaces a 2010 Crown Victoria that went down last year.

“About nine months ago it was out of service,” Wayda said. “The repairs were more than the vehicle was worth, so we decided to part ways with it.”

Wayda said the vehicle cost $45,400, and was paid for by borough funds, noting that the borough had been putting away $10,000 a year in anticipation of the purchase.

“We certainly appreciate the fact they’re willing to keep us up to date with vehicles,” he said. “It has all the most modern and up-to-date equipment, which makes doing our job all the more easier.”

The vehicle joins a 2019 Ford Police Interceptor SUV, and gives the department four vehicles in its fleet.

Wayda said that vehicle came from Kovatch in Nesquehoning and cost $42,187. The borough previously received a grant for $31,440 from Sands Casino gaming money.
