Polk firefighters to host second cruise night event

The Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company will host its second “Cruise In, Dine Outside” event on Friday and Saturday.

Friday is classic car and hot rod night from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday is Jeep and truck night from 2 to 8 p.m.

“We’re adding music and sweet corn to our second cruise event,” said Aaron Keller, fire company president.

SteelCreek band will perform on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m.

“We will be playing a mix of country cover tunes with a little bit of rock ’n’ roll mixed in with it,” said Jeni Hackett, lead singer and guitar player.

Dean Haydt, whose son Dylan dresses up as the fire company’s Dalmatian mascot, has volunteered his time to roast sweet corn.

“He is building a corn roaster on site. He has always wanted to roast corn for us. We’ll sell it out of the trailer with the hamburgers and hot dogs,” Keller said.

Like other community organizations, the fire company has struggled through the pandemic and shutdown. It had to cancel its big indoor fundraisers like breakfasts and bingo, and pay close attention to the budget.

“Anything helps right now,” Keller said about money raised at the outdoor cruise events and their grab-and-go pancake breakfast in July.

“It’s always great getting to perform in your hometown, but it’s an even better feeling to get to perform and help out a local organization that does so much for our community. Especially during these times when raising money has proven to be quite difficult,” Hackett said.

Fire company members will also sell T-shirts, mugs and 50/50 raffle tickets. The Ladies’ Auxiliary will have a bake sale.

Dale’s Concessions will sell French fries, pierogies, beverages and ice cream.

The fire company held its first cruise event in late June.

“The first one went well. We did not know what to expect. Friday night was our stronger night despite the rain,” Keller said.

In June, Jeeps and trucks were on display Friday night, while the cars and hot rods came Saturday. For the second event, they decided to reverse the nights.

There are no registration fees for the cruise nights. Anyone can participate.

Social distancing and face masks are required for the event.

The fire company is located at 511 Interchange Road, Kresgeville.
