State police find loaded gun, ammo in traffic stop

State police at Lehighton are investigating a firearms incident that occurred at 12:29 a.m. Aug. 7.

Troopers said a traffic stop of a 1999 Honda Accord was made along Lehigh Drive in East Penn Township. The driver, who troopers declined to identify, was suspected of driving under the influence of a controlled substance. The driver refused to submit to any testing.

Located within the vehicle was a fully loaded firearm hidden behind a compartment in the vehicle dash board area. None of the vehicle’s occupants, who troopers declined to identify, possessed a license to carry a concealed firearm. The vehicle was then towed to the barracks.

A search warrant for the vehicle was secured from a district judge. The search yielded an additional 26 rounds of ammunition matching the ammunition discovered in the previously seized firearm, as well as drug paraphernalia.

Troopers said the investigation is continuing and appropriate criminal charges will be filed.
