State police report on DUI/drug cases
State police at Fern Ridge reported on the following driving under the influence and drug possession cases:
• On July 18 at 1:03 a.m. troopers conducted a traffic stop along Route 209 at Route 715, in Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, for a vehicle code violation. It was determined that the driver, Michael Hoffman, 26, of Saylorsburg, was driving under the influence of a controlled substance and was placed under arrest. He was transported to the county DUI center for a blood drawn.
• On July 30 at 9:53 p.m. troopers conducted a traffic stop along Interstate 80 eastbound in Kidder Township, Carbon County. During an investigation the driver was found to be under the influence. A probably cause search of the vehicle, a 2005 Honda Odyssey, was conducted and found was marijuana, THC vape cartridges and a large amount of cash. The three occupants, identified as Luis Varga, 19, of Harlem, New York, Heyden Diaz Cespedes, 23, of West Hazleton, and Januel Martinez, 18, of Hazleton, were all taken into custody and transported to the barracks where they were processed. The three are facing drug possession and related charges. The investigation is continuing.
• On July 30 at 7:55 p.m. troopers observed a 2012 Nissan Maxima traveling westbound on I-80 in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County, with an expired registration. A vehicle stop was conducted. An odor of marijuana was detected emanating from the vehicle. A probable search was conducted and found was suspected marijuana, a grinder and rolling papers.
One of the occupants of the vehicle, Israel Betances, 27, of Reading, admitted the items were his. He is facing drug charges, troopers said.
