Penn Forest gas station seeks OK for beer sales

A Penn Forest Township gas station is seeking approval to begin takeout beer sales.

Penn Forest Plaza LLC, which operates a Sunoco Gas Station on Route 903, plans to transfer a liquor license from a shuttered bar in East Side Borough so it can begin sales.

“What he’s looking to do is sell 6 and 12 packs,” said Alan Katz, representing Penn Forest Township LLC. “The license comes from East Side Inn Inc.”

Due to the number of existing liquor licenses in Penn Forest Township, the transfer requires the approval of the township supervisors.

Under state law, a business that transfers in a liquor license from another municipality must get approval from their township or borough if it already has more than one liquor license per 3,000 residents.

Once the business owner gives notice, the borough or township has 45 days to make a decision, or the business owner can take them to court.

The supervisors agreed to schedule the hearing before their next meeting on Sept. 8. The hearing will take place at 6:45 p.m. at the Penn Forest Township Municipal Building, 2010 Route 903, Jim Thorpe.
