Musikfest gears up for 10 days of virtual concerts

Pedal steel master Robert Randolph, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root, Adam Weiner of indie rockers Low Cut Connie and Reverend Horton Heat, as well as perennial festival favorites such as Scythian, Craig Thatcher & Nyke van Wyk and Igor and the Red Elvises, are among the 40 musical acts that will offer streaming sets as part of Musikfest July 31-Aug. 9.

The 2020 festival will present four bands each evening starting at 7 p.m. via Musikfest.org and Musikfest’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/musikfest.

The daily schedule of performers can be found on the Musikfest website.

Artists performing as part of Musikfest for the first time include alternative R&B singer Audrey Nuna, as well as jazz singer and trumpet player Brian Newman, best known for his work with Lady Gaga.

In addition to the 40 streaming sets, nearly 40 other artists will perform live from the Service Electric TV studios during Musikfest.

All performances will air on Service Electric and then stream on Musikfest.org.

Martin Guitar Jam in Place

Martin Guitar is bringing a new component to Virtual Musikfest with its daily Jam in Place show every evening of the festival.

The Martin Guitar Jam in Place Stage will kick off the Virtual Musikfest stream at www.musikfest.org at 6 or 6:30 p.m. nightly July 31-Aug. 9.

The Jam in Place Stage will feature performances from Martin Guitar artists Shawn Camp, a two-time Grammy-winning performer and top songwriter; Lauren Mascitti, a former American Idol contestant; Bri Bagwell, a number-one Texas country artist; Kendal Conrad, a familiar face at Musikfest and other ArtsQuest events; and more.

The complete Jam In Place schedule is on Musikfest’s website; shows start at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

“Martin Guitar is proud to continue our partnership with Musikfest bringing this stellar lineup of artists to the 2020 virtual festival,” says Martin Guitar Senior Director of Marketing Michael Nelson. “From out-of-this-world pop to Grammy Award-winning bluegrass and country, these Martin playing artists are sure to get the nights started right.”

There will also be a few live concerts during the festival at SteelStacks.

ArtsQuest, the nonprofit that presents the festival, will offer outdoor dining on the Air Products Town Square & Levitt Pavilion lawn July 31-Aug. 1, and Aug. 7-9. The SteelStacks campus will open at 6 p.m. each night, with live music starting at 7 p.m.

Guests who want to attend Musikfest 2020 in person must reserve a table on the Air Products Town Square or one of the 6-foot spots on the Levitt Pavilion lawn, perfect for putting out a blanket or lawn chairs to enjoy the music performances from the Highmark Blue Shield Community Stage via the Levitt Pavilion outdoor screen.

Both table and lawn spot reservations are good for single parties of up to four people, with campus attendance limited to ensure proper safe social distancing and follow all CDC, state and city health and safety guidelines.

Air Products Town Square guests can enjoy dinner available from the ArtsQuest Center menu.

Levitt Pavilion lawn spots can purchase food and beverages via the Mack Truck Stop, bar on the lawn and the “Fest Food To-go Service,” featuring 10 Musikfest food vendors set up on PNC Plaza.

All proceeds from table and lawn spot reservations will go toward helping to cover additional staffing and infrastructure costs for cleaning, as well as to support the nonprofit ArtsQuest.

Reservations for table and lawn spots are available at musikfest.org.

Private backyard concert

Wells Fargo is joining with ArtsQuest to offer one winner the opportunity to have a concert in their backyard with family and friends.

As part of the “Your HausPlatz contest presented by Wells Fargo,” Musikfest favorite Billy Bauer will present a backyard concert on Aug. 7.

Fans can enter a contest to win this personal show by commenting on questions posted on Musikfest’s social media pages up until July 26.

As part of the “Your HausPlatz presented by Wells Fargo” contest, ArtsQuest will share a series of questions via Facebook.com/Musikfest and Instagram.com/Musikfest.

Musikfest fans are encouraged to follow along on each platform and share their response. One winner for the backyard concert will be selected at random.

The winner of “Your HausPlatz presented by Wells Fargo” will enjoy the backyard concert, as well as prize packs provided by D.G. Yuengling & Son.

All rules regarding social distancing and the wearing of personal protection masks or face coverings will be enforced.

Fireworks

Musikfest 2020 will close with the festival’s annual fireworks display over the City of Bethlehem.

The display will take place at its traditional time of 10 p.m. on the last night of the festival, Aug. 9.

“The closing-night fireworks are an event that so many people look forward to each year,” says ArtsQuest Chief Operating Officer Curt Mosel. “Unfortunately, they are also a big investment and something, quite honestly, we did not think were possible for 2020.

“When Service Electric heard that we may have to cancel the display, they immediately jumped in to cover the costs so that we could close out the festival with one if its longest standing traditions. People throughout the city and neighboring communities will be able to watch the fireworks from their backyards, front porches or even live on television thanks to this incredible community and ArtsQuest partner.”

The Musikfest 2020 fireworks are also being sponsored by Garden State Fireworks, which have been providing the annual display for the festival since 2009.

The Sofa Kings is just one of many bands who will participate in the Virtual Musikfest this year. A complete lineup of events can be found at www.musikfest.org. CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS
