Lansford council hires code inspector

Lansford Borough Council has hired a code inspector.

During council’s meeting on Wednesday, the board voted to hire Arro Consulting Inc. of Orwigsburg to fill the vacancy. The only other applicant for the position was Beers Engineering Inc. in Lehighton.

President Bruce Markovich said both representatives who came out to represent their companies were informed and talented, however, the board decided to go with Arro Consulting because they had a more general specialization while Joy Beers from Beers Engineering specialized in structural engineering.

The board agreed that they will need help with structural engineering in the future and decided they would call Beers as needed.

Arro Consulting was also appointed as borough engineer.

Police matters

Borough Mayor Michele Bartek said there were 325 incidents reported for the month of June and attributed a large portion of the calls to firework disturbances.

She asked the board to consider requiring permits for certain types of fireworks while banning the use of others.

“Our officers were like Ping-Pong balls,” Bartek said. “Some people were using really strong ground fireworks, and the only way to stop it is to catch them in the act. Instead of fighting it, I want to find a way to control it.”

Markovich said the board would reexamine the issue at another time.
