Walker approves Taser for police force

Craig Wagner began the regular meeting for Walker Township on Thursday by thanking the members of their police force for serving during the pandemic of COVID-19.

Police personnel in attendance requested a Taser and a company phone with unlimited service to have access to JNet, the state’s primary public safety and criminal justice information service,

Police want to be able to perform license plate searches and checking for search warrants.

The Taser will cost the borough approximately $1,600 and it includes cartridges, holsters and a battery pack. The station believes it will be a useful tool in de-escalating violent situations that could end with gun use.

The board voted to approve the purchases and also let the public know they will purchase a phone of their own for office use.

According to the police report, there were 12 calls responded to in the month of June and speed lines were painted. The police addressed PFA issues, child abuse claims, issues with fireworks and residents who were performing burnouts with their vehicles near Heisler’s.

Road report

Road Master Chad Felty said he was doing more COVID-19 related cleaning and sanitizing.

He said he fixed shoulders, some on Brooke Lane, and plans have been made to widen the road on Shady Lane.

Resident Ron Farrell requested speed limit or lines to be put on Brooke Lane. Felty said he may have to do a speed study to issue a speed limit but the board acknowledged his request.

Diane Krapf asked the board members about Kettle Road, saying they were to fix bumps on the road months ago when she originally brought it to their attention.

Felty said he put coal patches on the road but admitted it did not work well. He said he would get to it and redo the necessary fixes. Chairman Craig Wagner said the township is doing as many roads as possible.

Today a project on Mountain Road will begin and there is currently no estimated time as to when the project will be finished.
