State park activities

Environmental education program are scheduled for the state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County, for Saturday.

• At 10:30 a.m. Scavenger Hunt: A park naturalist at the Locust Lake program shelter for a self-guided scavenger hunt. Come alone or bring your family to explore Locust Lake State Park in search of different items. Bring a pencil. (Limited to 25 people).

• At 2 p.m. join a park naturalist as she discusses the bears of the world. As more people move out to rural areas, bear encounters increase. The program will include bear habitat, feeding and sleeping habits. Also discussed will be what to do if you encounter a bear in the wild. Meet at the amphitheater at Locust Lake State Park. (Limited to 25 people).

• At 5 p.m., Susan Gallagher, chief naturalist at the Carbon County Environmental Education Center, will be bringing some of her rehabilitated educational animals to the Locust Lake State Park amphitheater. Shine only. (Limited capacity).

Registration is required for all programs. You can preregister by calling Robin Tracey at 570-467-2506. You must have a mask and be prepared to practice social distancing.

• Join Robin Tracey from Tuscarora State Park for a wildflower walk at Swatara State Park on Monday. The trail is 8 miles long and moderate. The trail runs parallel to Swatara Creek. Participants will be hiking down to the old steel bridge and crossing to make a loop around the back part of the park.

The group will also be hiking down to Bordner cabin. Meet in the parking lot at Sand Siding trailhead just off Route 443 in Pine Grove at 10:30 a.m. Bring a lunch and water. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people.
