Man attempts to break into home, threatens to kill homeowner

An Albrightsville man has been charged with threatening to kill a homeowner as he attempted to break into her home.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Brendon King of the Fern Ridge barracks in the case of Michael Devitt, 31:

At 4:50 a.m. June 11, King was dispatched to a home in the 100 block of East Old Stage Road, Penn Forest Township, for the report of a break in of a motor vehicle and an attempted burglary of the residence.

Kidder Township Police Department had Devitt detained at the scene.

Kidder Township officer Austin J. Bott Jr. said he observed Devitt crawling out of the rear of the Dodge Durango.

Upon speaking with the owner of the residence, she said that she heard banging on the door with Devitt outside yelling, “Let me in, I want water.”

The homeowner said Devitt was threatening to kill her while attempting to open the door handle.

She said that Devitt smashed flower pots; attempted to smash the front window with a rock; ripped the screen door; kicked the front door multiple times; and then attempted to get into her crawl space.

While in police custody and Devitt showed signs of impairment of a controlled substance.

Devitt admitted to recent methamphetamine use.

He faces charges of burglary; criminal trespass; terroristic threats; criminal mischief; and public drunkenness and similar misconduct.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing June 24 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
