No. 9 Mine open for tours

The No. 9 Mine will be open for tours this weekend as Carbon County enters the green phase of the state’s reopening plan. The No. 9 Mine, located just off Route 209 in Lansford, is the oldest deep mine in the world and is a site where coal miners toiled to recover Anthracite Coal or ‘black diamonds’ as it was called. The gift shop will also be open. Visitors are required to wear a mask for the coal mine tour and in the gift shop and practice social distancing. A hand sanitizer station is available in the gift shop. Beginning today, the mine will be open weekly from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Mine tours run hourly from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For questions or to make group reservations, call 570-645-7074.
