Police: Man stole delivery truck; hit cruiser twice

A man is in custody after he stole a delivery truck and fled police, twice deliberately crashing into a police cruiser Sunday in Northampton County.

State police at Bethlehem released the following in the case against Alonzo Gaffney.

Troopers were dispatched at 7:55 a.m. to Route 22 E/Bath Pike in the area of Schoenersville Road for the report of a stolen vehicle out of Bethlehem.

Troopers spotted the stolen Giant grocery delivery vehicle at 8:02 a.m., the fleeing vehicle went on the Route 33 North ramp, entered the grassy median area and began traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. The fleeing vehicle caused multiple oncoming vehicles to make evasive maneuvers to avoid being struck.

The truck turned onto Interstate 78 westbound to the Route 33 northbound ramp traveling in the wrong direction of travel.

The vehicle was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-78, and continued to travel about three miles in the wrong direction of travel, before it crossed the center median and then began traveling east on I-78 east.

While traveling on I-78 east, a trooper attempted to slow the fleeing vehicle by positioning his marked vehicle directly in front of it. The fleeing vehicle then struck the rear of the patrol vehicle.

The patrol vehicle then swerved to the right and was struck again.

The truck swerved back into the right lane and then onto the grassy, median where it came to a stop.

The patrol vehicle suffered rear end and drivers side damage.

The driver, who was later identified as Gaffney, was removed from the vehicle in a delirious state, and was acting erratically and yelling nonsensical words while repeatedly stating that he wanted to die.

Gaffney was then taken into custody at 8:11 a.m., and exhibited signs of intoxication and was unable to answer simple questions.

Gaffney was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, fleeing and eluding, receiving stolen property, driving under the influence, false ID to law enforcement and other related traffic offenses.
