Sixth-grade students at Towamensing Elementary got a final lap around the school’s parking lot Thursday during a drive-thru moving up ceremony.

One by one, students were driven around the perimeter of the lot, which was lined by Towamensing’s teachers and staff. Near the steps by the cafeteria, teachers gave students any awards and certificates, and other parting gifts, they earned during the year.

“We’re glad to be able to have this in place of our regular moving up ceremony to put some closure on the year for the students,” Kathryn Zurn, sixth-grade teacher, said following the event. “The students deserve a proper send-off to the junior high, and it was great to see them one more time.”

As students exited the lot, Junior High Principal Rich DeSocio held a sign that read, “Welcome To Seventh Grade.”

Dillon Borger and Taylor Eckhart earned the Good Citizenship Award from the Pennsylvania Senate. The award is given to students who exemplify qualities of good citizenship through their display of outstanding character, leadership and scholarship.

Borger, along with Hannah Diener, received the Principal’s Plaque for earning an “A” in each subject for each marking period in grades 3-6. Borger was also named a Maestros Inner Circle Award recipient for scoring outstanding in music every marking period of his elementary career.

Taylor Eckhart, Catherine Morgan and Kylie Reabold earned an Art Superstar Award for scoring outstanding in art during each marking period, K-6.

Hailey Barry, Camryn Bonser, Borger, Kayla Kormann and Hadlee Lake were honored for perfect attendance.
