Ongoing probe

Kayla Marie Weaver, 23, and formerly of Effort, was sentenced to serve 90 days in prison followed by six months in the Intermediate Punishment Program with electronic monitoring on a charge of criminal conspiracy - possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

She was arrested on Sept. 3, 2019, by Lehighton police following a traffic stop along Route 443. Methamphetamine was found in the car.

The police report indicated the stop was part of an ongoing investigation by the county drug task force and part of a surveillance operation.

Defense Attorney Adam Weaver, no relation, said his client has no prior arrests and cooperated with police when arrested. He asked that the entire sentence be spent on house arrest. Weaver noted his client is pregnant.

Matika said the presentence investigation report prepared by the adult probation office and the arresting officers report indicate that Weaver was not considered a typical drug dealer, more that “she went along for the ride.”

In addition to the jail term, Matika ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, render 50 hours of community service when paroled and was granted work-release privileges if she secures a job. She was given credit for two days already served.

She will begin the jail term at 1 p.m. on May 29.
