Jim Thorpe Area School District plans to hold its 2020 graduation ceremony at Pocono Raceway.
Superintendent John Rushefski said Wednesday that the district has scheduled the Class of 2020 commencement for Wednesday, June 3, on the track at Pocono.
“Pocono Raceway is the best option as far as being safe and giving them the memory of a lifetime,” said Superintendent John Rushefski.
He said graduates and attendees will remain in their cars with social distancing guidelines in place.
Rushefski said some portions of Jim Thorpe's ceremony may be pre-recorded, but school officials said they hope to incorporate as much of the traditional ceremony as possible.
“We’re going to replicate as much as we can,” Rushefski said.
Principal Tom Lesisko said it will be a fine event for the Class of 2020.
"It will be the perfect solution for JTAHS Commencement 2020 where extended family may be present, people will maintain social distance, memorable for the graduates, and it is in our backyard," he said.
A raceway spokesman said talks were underway on Wednesday, but couldn’t confirm that they had reached an agreement with the district.
The raceway announced on Monday that North Pocono High School will hold its graduation on the track on June 12.
