American flags will fly this Memorial Day on the graves of approximately 13,000 veterans who have been laid to rest in Carbon County cemeteries.
On Thursday, Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that after checking, Carbon County does have enough American flags for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.
Most have been distributed to various organizations which will put the flags on veterans’ graves.
“We’re in good shape,” he said. Carbon had already put its order in for flags before the pandemic shuttered some companies’ operations. “Other counties who didn’t get the order in on time may not have them in time.”
Two weeks ago, Nothstein spoke about a concern of the Military and Veterans Affairs committee for the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania regarding the availability of American flags for veterans’ graves on Memorial Day.
He said that flags and grave markers were on back order because of the pandemic.
