McFarland & Sons Garage, family business thrives in East Penn

McFarland & Sons Garage Inc., a family-owned garage in East Penn Township, was founded nearly six decades ago in 1964.

Calvin McFarland purchased the garage on Lizard Creek Road on March 17, 1964, where he began running the automotive repair shop and renamed it.

As his sons got older, he began teaching them about mechanics. Calvin’s sons began working for him early on, as they recall being raised at the shop. Troy grew up working on cars, and passed down his knowledge to his son Kyle like his own father had years before.

The garage currently employs four working mechanics: father and son, owner Troy McFarland, son Kyle; Dennis Smale; Kerry Eckhart; and the shop’s office secretary, Stacy Schleicher.

Troy and Kyle continue learning by keeping themselves up to date and knowledgeable with the current evolving automotive trends in technology and learning the latest industry standards.

“We are keeping up with the new era of technology both in the shop and with the tools the mechanics use. Internet resources, social media, and invoicing systems on computers have helped to take the business forward as well,” Schleicher said.

In addition to the repair shop, Troy McFarland operates an auto sales lot, McFarland’s Auto Sales LLC, which sells pre-owned vehicles and is located just across the street from the garage.

The garage works with Tech Net, which covers warranties on parts and labor and free road side services, performs both emissions and non-emissions inspections, enhanced inspections, makes hydraulic hoses for equipment, do wheel alignments and installs tires.

They inspect cars, trucks, trailers, motorcycles, campers as well as motor homes.

They work with local townships’ maintenance vehicles, as well as service other government vehicles for fish and game commission, as well as local law enforcement and state police vehicles.

“We try our best to take in people that do not have an appointment and work them into our schedule. We offer after-hour drop-off as well. We also offer drop-off, and if the job is small we have a waiting room if you need to wait,” Schleicher said.

“All of our prices are extremely competitive and we have a very low labor rate in the industry,” said Troy McFarland.
