Weatherly to begin online classes Monday

Weatherly Area School District is prepared to go to online learning as of March 30.

Superintendent Teresa Young said the teachers have been working last week and this week on learning and setting up Google Classrooms for their classes/courses, and much of this week has been spent actually having the teachers reach out to each student and making sure that they know how to access their class.

A few teachers are using a different platform called Schoology.

“We made announcements last week for parents to come to the school and pick up textbooks and devices if they needed one. We let small groups at a time into our buildings for that purpose,” Young said. “Every student that needed a device (iPads for K and 1) and Chromebooks for grades 3-12 got one.”

About 35 families did not have internet access, so the districts ordered hot spots for them.

“The hot spots are not in yet, so until we get them, we have arranged for teachers to send us the classwork for those students, and we have designated staff coming in to copy that work off, put it in folders and we will be using our district transportation to get that material to our students twice a week,” Young said.

At the same time when the driver drops off new material, they will pick up what the students have completed and bring it back to the school to have scanned and sent back to the teachers.

“All of our teachers have designated, set times to meet remotely with students for support. For direct instruction, they are recording their lessons so that students have the flexibility of accessing it live or later,” Young said.
