Jim Thorpe meeting to focus on essentials

Jim Thorpe Borough announced Tuesday it plans to hold its April 9 meeting while taking care of only essential items.

The agenda, which can be found on jtborough.org, features only items such as bill payments, job posting for the sewer department equipment and plant operator, and awarding of bids for chemicals at the water and sewer plant.

“The safety of the public, as well as our elected and appointed officials and employees, is our top priority,” Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said. “To that end, we are completing necessary tasks, being as transparent as we can for the public and doing what we can to have the utmost social distancing we can with our meetings. Our goal is to complete our necessary work, hold required meetings, allow public to attend if they wish, and provide as much information as possible to them as to any action to be considered so they can make an informed decision on attending.”

All borough council work sessions have been canceled until further notice.

The borough is continuing to function with limited operations until further notice.

Essential services such as police, fire and public works remain operational. However, the borough office, police station service window, borough water and sewer plants, and borough garage are closed until further notice. Borough administration and the utility office can be reached at 570-325-3025. For nonemergency police, call 570-325-9111.

All customers are encouraged to pay their utility bill by mail, utility drop box in front of borough hall, with a credit card on the borough website or through the Mauch Chunk Trust Company or Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank. All real estate tax payments should be made by mail or at the utility drop box.

No permit applications are being accepted until further notice. No building or zoning inspections for construction projects will be completed until further notice.

Borough parks and Sam Miller Field are also closed until further notice.
