Tamaqua has a new venue for powerlifting

Tamaqua has a new facility for powerlifting.

West Broad Barbell, located on West Cottage Avenue, is a fresh venue in town and a perfect place to get those gains.

The new facility, which opened in January, is located under the Station Fitness Center. The gym offers a style of powerlifting that’s hard to come by locally.

“It’s a Strongman gym,” said owner Eric Orach. “Anything you see on TV as far as Strongman with lifting the stones or kegs, all the kinds of walks and service dumbbells, are here. We’re the first one in the immediate area with this kind of specific lifting.”

West Broad Barbell is roughly 1600-square feet with plenty of room to comfortably train.

“I had some guys competing in some Strongman things,” Orach said. “I have to keep reinventing myself because things get stale.”

Orach knew over the summer months the direction he wanted to take with his then empty venue.

“These were just two empty storefronts. I had different ideas over the years,” Orach said.

Orach had a Push-Pull Pizza Party planned for Saturday, but the deadlift/bench press event has been postponed due to the Gov. Tom Wolfe’s new regulations to aid in the fight against COVID-19.

Orach said to keep an eye out for a new date for West Broad Barbell’s first event.

Despite the postponement, the future is bright for West Broad Barbell, as the spacious venue is ideal to host many different competitive events.

Orach has top-of-the-line equipment, and the venue is spotless from wall-to-wall.

“My gym is clean and it’s large enough that if you want to keep your distance from other people, it’s possible to do that,” he said.

Orach offers packages for both fitness centers, as well as one that allows for to training in both facilities.

“You can’t put all of your eggs in one basket,” he said. “I thought it would be more specific and it would attract more outside people.”
