Franklin sets new pay rates for part-time officers

Franklin Township has set new pay rates in an attempt to attract more part-time police officers.

Also on Tuesday, supervisors unanimously agreed to advertise for additional part-time officers to help round out its police force.

The new rates are as follows:

• Part-time officers that are beginning their employment, and current part-time officers with a maximum of 499 work hours, will receive $19 per hour.

• Part-time officers who have a total of 500 to 999 work hours will receive $20.18 per hour.

• Part-time officers who have a total equaling and/or in excess of 1,000 work hours will receive $21.37 per hour.

After the board took action, resident Larry Williams expressed concerns over speeding in the township.

Board Chairman Jason Frey, along with Supervisor Robin Cressley, both agreed with Williams.

Frey said he’s witnessed the speeding firsthand, while Cressley said it’s been an ongoing issue.

“This is all the time, people complaining,” Cressley said. “We are changing the schedule this weekend.”

After the meeting, Frey said the scheduling change will be done on a trial basis in which full-time officers — except for the chief — will work 12-hour days.

Frey said the township had six part-time officers, but is looking to add three part-timers to bring it back up to six.

Six part-timers, coupled with the township’s four full-time officers including its police chief, would get it back to full strength, he said.

Frey said the township eventually plans to apply for a grant to add another full-time officer.
