Seedings, matchups released for D-11 basketball tourney

Seedings and matchups for the District 11 basketball tournament were released over the weekend.

A total of 13 Times News area teams are part of the field that tips off Wednesday with a Class 6A boys first round game.

The tournament will then hold quarterfinal round games on Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22; semifinal round games on Tuesday, Feb. 25 and Wednesday, Feb. 26; and championship and consolation games on Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, Feb. 29.

The Palmerton boys earned the lone No. 1 seed among area teams. The Blue Bombers, the top team in the four-team Class 3A field, will face Panther Valley in an all-area semifinal matchup.

In addition to the Bombers and Panthers, Weatherly (1A), Marian (2A), Northwestern (4A) and Tamaqua (4A) also qualified in the boys field.

Seven area girls teams are part of the postseason, led by No. 2 seed Jim Thorpe. The Olympians are part of a seven-team Class 4A field.

Six other girls teams from the area will be part of the postseason tournament. They include Marian (2A), Northern Lehigh (3A), Palmerton (3A), Northwestern (4A), Tamaqua (4A) and Pleasant Valley (6A).

The opening weekend of the tournament features several doubleheader and tripleheaders that involve area teams.

On Friday, the Marian boys (vs. Williams Valley at 6 p.m.) and Tamaqua boys (vs. Pine Grove at 7:30 p.m.) will both be part of a twinbill at Martz Hall in Pottsville. Also on Friday, the Northwestern boys (vs. Bethlehem Catholic at 6 p.m.) will play at Whitehall; and the Pleasant Valley girls (vs. Nazareth at 7:30 p.m.) will play at Catasauqua.

Saturday features a pair of shared sites for Times News area teams. The Marian girls (vs. Williams Valley at 4 p.m.) and the Tamaqua girls (vs. Wilson at 7 p.m.) will bookend a tripleheader at Martz Hall; while the Weatherly boys (vs. Lincoln Leadership Academy at 1 p.m.) and the Jim Thorpe girls (vs. Pine Grove at 2:30 p.m.) will be part of a doubleheader at Lehighton. Also Saturday, the Northwestern girls (vs. Allentown Central Catholic at 1 p.m.) will play at Catasauqua.

This year’s District 11 tournament features 71 teams — 37 boys and 34 girls. There are two subregionals in both the boys and the girls tourney. In boys 1A, District 2 is part of the field, while in 3A, District 1 is part of the mix. In the girls tourney, Class 1A is a subregional with District 2, and Class 5A is part of a subregional with District 4.
