Colleagues rally to help local family after massive fire in Mahoning

A GoFundMe account has been set up for a man whose home was ravaged by a swift-moving fire Wednesday morning in Mahoning Township.

Colleagues of Craig Strachan, who lost everything after the fire broke out at his home at 50 Manor Lane East, launched the fundraiser hoping to help.

Contributions toward the dwelling fire in Mahoning can be made at gofundme.com/f/dwelling-fire-in-mahoning.

At press time, $3,081 of the $3,000 goal had been raised.

According to Trina Foley, originator of the GoFundMe account, “I am reaching out with sad news … one of our fellow co-workers had a fire at his home (Wednesday). He lost everything in this fire. We are starting this GoFundMe page so he can get back on his feet. No animals or people were hurt thankfully. However, he did go home midday (Wednesday) from work to find his house was engulfed in flames.”

Foley asked those to, “Please keep Craig in your thoughts and prayers as he is piecing back together everything. Any and all contributions would be greatly appreciated. He has a very nice group of neighbors that have already helped out with some clothes, and a place to stay.”

Contacted Friday morning, Foley, a secretary at the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit, said colleagues are just trying to look out for Strachan as best they can in his time of need.

“He’s a great guy,” Foley said. “He’s part of our family.”

The fire broke out at around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at the home, according to Jay Michalik, assistant chief, Mahoning Valley Fire Company.

According to scanner reports, a passer-by saw flames coming from the roof of the home, which was completely engulfed in flames.

The dwelling was fully involved when firefighters arrived. Due to its location, without hydrants, they needed to establish a water supply.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by a state fire marshal.
