Carbon man given prison term for indecent assault
A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Friday on charges of indecent assault and corruption of a minor.
Christopher Gruver, 39, of Lansford, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve two to 18 months in jail on the indecent assault of a person less than 16 and one year probation on the corruption of a minor count, with the terms running consecutively. He previously pleaded to the charges.
He was charged by Lansford police for an incident on Aug. 1, 2018. A then 15-year-old girl told police that Gruver had fondled her in a residence along East Patterson Street and touched her inappropriately. Police also claimed that Gruver provided the female with alcohol. The corruption charge is for supplying the alcohol.
Gruver must also register for 25 years as a sexual offender under the provisions of Megan’s Law.
Gruver apologized for his actions. He told the court, “I’d like to apologize to the victim for my actions.” He admitted at the plea hearing to touching the victim’s breasts and also giving her beer and vodka.
It was noted Gruver is on probation in Luzerne County for two years on charges similar to the ones involving the sister of the victim in the Carbon case.
The victim’s father told the court how the incident as affected his daughter. He said, “She is doing everything she can to move forward.”
He said she is receiving counseling. He said, “She is a good kid, an honor student and is involved in sports.”
The victim’s stepmother asked the court to impose a prison term noting the Luzerne County case.
Assistant District Attorney Brian B. Gazo, who prosecuted the case, said sexual assault cases are hardest to handle noting, “because of the vulnerability of the victim.”
He asked the court to impose a minimum of two months in prison and run it consecutive to Luzerne County.
In addition to the jail term, Nanovic ordered Gruver to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, supply a DNA sample, have no contact with the victim, follow all provisions of Megan’s Law including registering with the state police for the next 25 years as a sexual offender, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation.
He will begin the jail term at 9 p.m. on Jan. 24 and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends. The term runs concurrent with Luzerne County.
