Wind knocked out power to nearly 3,000 customers in Schuylkill

Thousands of PPL customers in West Penn Township were without power Sunday morning.

Carol Obando-Derstine, PPL regional affairs director, said 2,977 customers were affected in the West Penn Township and Tamaqua area starting at 7:26 a.m. Sunday.

The E Z Market, along with affiliated stores at the intersection of Routes 309 and 895 in Snyders, were closed as the outage ran about eight miles from the top of the Blue Mountain to Tamaqua.

“Strong damaging winds caused power outages across their service territory Saturday night into Sunday morning,” Obando-Derstine said. “Our crews worked as safely and quickly as possible to restore power.”

Obando-Derstine said that as of 2 p.m. Sunday, about 1,300 of its 1.4 million customers were without power, adding the most extensive wind damage occurred in the central and northeastern portions of its service territory.

She said customers who were affected by the outage have all had their power restored.
