Tamaqua man gets state time in assault

A Tamaqua man who assaulted a family member in April was sentenced to 12 to 24 months in state prison, in a ruling by Schuylkill County Judge Charles Miller on Dec. 11.

Mark K. Scheitrum, 33, was arrested April 26 by Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville. State police had responded to Laurel Lane in Walker Township at about 6 a.m. for a report of a domestic assault. The victim, a 62-year-old man, had a severe laceration to his head.

Scheitrum scuffled with state police, who charged him with simple assault with serious bodily injury, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia. Scheitrum entered guilty pleas to the charges. Miller sentenced him to 12 to 24 months on the assault charge, and 12 months on probation for each of the other charges, to run concurrently.

Scheitrum had also been arrested by state police at Frackville the previous day on a charge of defiant trespass. Miller sentenced him to 12 months on probation on that charge. He must also pay fines and costs totaling $230. Scheitrum, who was unable to post $50,000 straight cash bail set at the time of his arrest has been held at Schuylkill County Prison since April 25. He will get credit for time served.
