Walnutport council debates 2020 tax increase

Walnutport continues to slash away at next year’s spending plan in the hopes to stave off a budget increase.

Councilwoman Jennifer Wentz presented borough council with a revised 2020 budget at Thursday’s workshop.

Wentz said the revised budget showed scenarios for a 1-mill increase, half-mill increase or no millage increase.

“At this point, I can say we’re comfortably not looking at a mill,” Wentz said. “We cut some more, and then we cut some more.”

Wentz told council to make either her or borough secretary Annette Lacko aware if there are any other cuts they would like to see made to the spending plan.

Council is scheduled to grant final adoption of the 2020 spending plan when it meets at 7 p.m. Dec. 19.

Last month, council on a 6-1 vote agreed to advertise next year’s spending plan with a 1-mill increase, though borough officials stressed it should be able to come down.

Wentz stressed at that time that just because council advertised the budget with a millage increase didn’t mean it will actually end up that way.

She said the borough was looking at a deficit next year, but added there is still some outstanding tax money coming into the borough.

Wentz previously said health insurance costs, along with wage increases, are among the borough’s largest expenses.

Last December, council unanimously adopted this year’s spending plan with no increase, which left the tax rate at 18.75 mills.
