Police have charged an 88-year-old Monroe County man with homicide in the shooting death of his 72-year-old girlfriend.

Bernard Pedreira was charged Thursday with criminal homicide.

The 72-year-old woman who was not identified, died of a gunshot wound to the chest. A rifle was found nearby.

According to Pocono Mountain Regional Police, Pedreira and the woman were the only people at home at the time of the shooting.

Thursday morning, Pedreira went to a neighbor’s home and said his girlfriend had been shot after an argument over a firearm. The neighbor then called 911.

Pedreira was arraigned on the charges and sent to Monroe County Correctional Facility without bail.

Police said they were conducting interviews and serving search warrants to locate evidence in the case.
