St. John Neumann hosts walk-a-thon, science demo

Students from St. John Neumann Regional School’s Palmerton and Slatington campuses ended their school week with a spectacular, scientific display on the three stages of matter.

The demonstration — which featured Cathy Seachrist, an educational entertainer with Super Science Amazing Art, blowing bubbles and balloons — garnered endless laughs and shouts from the crowd of students. But Seachrist’s educational performance wasn’t the only exciting thing that took place at St. John’s on Friday.

Sixty-five kindergarten through eighth-grade students were also treated to a drum line, cheer performance and pizza lunch, all during the school’s annual walk-a-thon.

Even better yet, this year’s event raised more than $15,000, according to Chairman Jim Pompa, who has two sons attending St. John’s.

“It was the highest amount that we’ve raised in a few years,” Pompa said.

Mary Comensky, who took over as principal of St. John’s campus in Palmerton, said the walk-a-thon is particularly special, because it brings the two school campuses together into one body.

“We don’t get to do that too often,” Comensky said.

“We make it one day away from classes and we just focus on celebrating what makes our school special,” she added.

Funds raised will go toward the school’s operating budget.
