A handful of dogs and their owners paraded around the Ross Township park in their Halloween costumes on Saturday afternoon.

“The weather was beautiful. The turnout was light. Usually we have more dogs and other pets,” said Judy Breidinger, a member of Ross Township Park Committee and West End Park and Open Space Commission.

The two groups sponsored the annual event.

“We’ve been doing the parade for five or six years. We have had dogs, cats, parrots, chickens, hamsters and lizards,” Breidinger said.

She and Jeanette Drake were the judges. They watched the five sets of participants take two laps around the grass.

“It’s so sweet to see the animals come out and all the kids playing,” said Lucie White, who was dressed in a black spider costume with matching jewelry and weblike material.

Her dog, Karma, had a furry spider costume with two big eyes and eight dangling legs.

For a few minutes, kids and adults on the playground stopped their activity to watch the parade.

“I think it is fun to see the different costumes,” said 12-year-old Angelina Bucano.

She and her dog, Cooper, were Sumo wrestlers and won the pet and owner look-alike category this year. Two years ago, they came as a cheerleader and football player.

White and Karma won the Scariest. Dressed as a giant fish, Kathy Wescott and her fisherman dog, Tatiana, won for Most Original. Felicia Thornell as Little Red Riding Hood and her dog, Zeus — dressed as Grandma in a flower print nightgown — won Cutest.

Each winner received a gift certificate to a local business and some dog treats, Breidinger said.

“I loved the array of costumes. It made judging easy,” Drake said.
