Bears fall in EPC volleyball quarterfinals

There are many ways to generate momentum in volleyball.

Momentum could come from a big kill, an electrifying block or a diving defensive save.

But momentum can also come from something as simple as consistency, which is what Liberty was able to accomplish against Pleasant Valley in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference playoffs on Tuesday.

The No. 2 seeded Hurricanes consistently put together tough-to-handle serves, picked up early momentum and never relinquishing it against the No. 7 seeded Bears to advance to the semis with a 25-10, 25-16, 25-8 victory.

In the first set, Liberty got out to a dominant start. A furious offensive attack, featuring strong serving and net play resulted in a 25-10 victory.

It was evident from the onset that the PV defense looked a bit off, especially from its regular season form.

“We had a big injury to our team this week with our libero, who we won’t have for the rest of the season,” said Bears head coach John Gesiskie. “So, that was tough for us because nobody else really played there for us, so that definitely made an impact.

“Overall, we’re an inexperienced team. This was the first time most of these girls competed in a playoff game, so hopefully we can use this to get better for districts.”

The Bears had a much better showing in the second set, trailing just 18-15 at one point. Sara Frankunas — Pleasant Valley’s big hitter in the front — came up with a kill and a block in back-to-back plays to help the Bears get to within three points.

But, as it was able to do throughout the evening, Liberty finished the set on a 7-1 run, this time riding its power at the net with four different Hurricanes earning kills during the run.

“It all works together, when you’re able to get good serving, that makes it tough for the defense to return the ball, and then you’re getting balls back that set up your hitters,” said Liberty head coach Connor Swigert. “When you’re doing that, you’re going to have success.

“When our serving has been good this season, that’s when we have been at our best, and tonight the girls did a good job in that department.”

The third set was all Hurricanes as they turned in their best serving performance of the match. Liberty servers accounted for a combined nine aces in the set, with Jamie Byrne leading the way with four.

BEARS LEADERS ... Pleasant Valley was led by Frankunas, with four kills, one block and three digs. Cameron Caffrey added seven assists while Amanda Crilley helped out up front with three kills.

DISTRICT 11 PLAYOFFS ... At 11-5, the Bears currently are ranked as the No. 6 seed in Class 4A, although exactly how the EPC playoffs work out makes the ranking subject to change.
