Switchback Scamper

The 49th annual Switchback Scamper will take place beginning at 2 p.m. on Oct. 20. It will be a 10K run and 5K walk.

The course will begin in Summit Hill and travel the former Switchback Railroad trail to the Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

There is a fee to participate and may be paid the day of registration or mailed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 319 South Ave., Jim Thorpe. Checks are payable to Switchback Scamper.

Registration/pack pickup will take place at the Lake Park Wildoner/Koch pavilion from noon to 1:30 p.m. Registration deadline is race day.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of Carbon County.

Reunion held

Members of the 1964 class of Jim Thorpe High School held their 55th reunion on Sept. 28 at Dean Anthony’s Restaurant in Jim Thorpe.

Fifty members, spouses and friends attended the event. Ed Solomon served as chairman for the event, and his committee included Darlene Witt Benyo, Sharon Deats Kobal, Joann Lienhard Murtoff, Phyllis Burnhauser Barry, Pat Pry McCormick, Ellie Barno Evans, Kay Feuerstein Murphy, Ann Louise Klotz Hayes and Bill Diehm.

Natalie Wells Kmetz led the group in the singing of the school alma mater and the class song “I Believe.”

President Jeff James was on hand to give a welcoming speech. They also held a moment of silence for the deceased members of the class.

The class will now begin planning their next event to be held in two years, when they will celebrate their 75th birthdays.
