Beer/wine garden to be a part of Rocktoberfest

A beer and wine garden can be held as part of Lehighton’s Rocktoberfest 2019, just not at the original desired location.

On a 5-1 vote, borough council on Monday approved the Lehighton Downtown Initiative’s request to have a beer and wine garden, as well as rides and road closures.

The initial request from LDI was to hold the beer and wine garden in the Upper Park as part of its fourth annual Rocktoberfest event to be held Oct. 19-20.

However, Councilman Joe Flickinger recommended that council not allow the beer and wine garden to be held in the Upper Park since it’s currently undergoing renovation work.

“I would recommend not having anything on the grassy areas,” Flickinger said.

Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky — who cast the sole vote against the measure — said she is against the beer garden.

Ultimately, council decided that the beer and wine garden will be held at upper North Street.

In addition, it was decided that the rides will be on Constitution Avenue and Second Street. All road closure requests were agreed upon.

On a 5-0 vote at a special meeting in June, council agreed to award a contract in the amount of $468,500 to Kobalt Construction Inc., which was also the project coordinator for the borough’s refurbished downtown park.

The borough received funding in the amount of $350,000 from the Commonwealth Financing Authority for improvements to the park, which is used for concerts, movies and other community events.

That includes $150,000 that was received from the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program for improvements to the Upper Park Amphitheater, as well as $200,000 from the Multimodal Transportation Funds for streetscape and pedestrian improvements to the streets around the upper park.

Rocktoberfest is a two-day event that benefits breast cancer awareness.

Last year’s event raised $3,600 toward the cause.
