Nesquehoning man faces drug charges

A Nesquehoning man faces drug charges after police found nearly six bricks of heroin in his possession during a traffic stop.

James Joseph Simmons, 27, of Coal Street, was charged by Nesquehoning police with the manufacture, delivery or possession of drugs with the intent to deliver; unlawful possession of a controlled substance; possession of drug paraphernalia; and no headlights.

According to the affidavit, filed by Nesquehoning police officer Kyle Sabulsky, on July 30, Sabulsky was monitoring traffic along Route 93 when a silver Toyota drove by with a burned-out driver side headlight.

A vehicle stop was initiated, and when Sabulsky spoke with the driver, identified as Simmons, he noted Simmons seemed very nervous and had shallow breathing and shaking hands.

At first, Sabulsky was going to issue a warning to Simmons, who got out of the vehicle to look at his headlight, but asked if he could search the car, which Simmons agreed to allow.

During the search, Simmons mentioned that there was a hypodermic needle in the center console.

Police then discovered, in addition to the needle, various items used for drugs and five-and-a-half bricks amounting to 28 bundles of heroin/fentanyl, as well as $151.

Simmons was arraigned before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek on Sept. 18 and faces a preliminary hearing before Kosciolek on Oct. 16. He is free after posting $2,000 bail.
