Carbon County is helping a group aimed at helping the homeless secure funding to purchase a housing unit.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners approved the submission of an application for the Monroe County Local Share Account grant in the amount of $30,000 for Family Promise. The money, if secured, would be used to purchase a housing unit for families and women who are homeless, as well as a place to provide case management services that will allow for expanded shelter and day care services for the homeless.

Commissioner William O’Gurek commended Family Promise and said that the county would be administering the grant and is making the county planning office available to Family Promise for any paperwork and contracts with the application and grant.

“Whatever little bit we can help in this partnership is what we want to do,” O’Gurek said.

He asked Bob Jacobs, a commissioner candidate who has also been spearheading the movement to better help the homeless in Carbon County, to provide an update on the homelessness task force.

Jacobs said that the task force is moving forward and Family Promise is a big part in meeting the goals of the group.

He said that the groups are hoping to make an announcement regarding additional help available for the homeless in the next few months.
