The Victorian era at a wild party.

That’s what you’ll find at this year’s Totally Steampunk Event at the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center in Jim Thorpe on Nov. 2.

The event, which will run from 6 to 11 p.m. will bring guests back into a time where fashion meets fun and steam-powered machinery was an advanced technology.

Jonathan Blackwell-Rodgers, program manager for the museum, said that this is the second year the museum is hosting a Steampunk event.

“Since the Steampunk era is related to the Victorian era by architecture, design and clothing, it sparked this event,” he said, noting that the goal is to alternate between Steampunk and the Victorian ball in the future.

Visitors will be able to have a buffet meal, followed by fun with a tea duelling competition hosted by Dolly and Birdie, local magician Nate Heater performing magic tricks, or having their tarot cards read and dancing the night away listening to the band Eternal Frontier.

Blackwell-Rodgers said the tea duelling will be a treat for guests and play off the English tea time.

Two people will dunk biscuits in tea and then banter back and forth. The first biscuit to crumble or break is the loser.

“It could be two friends doing it or a husband and wife, anyone,” Blackwell-Rodgers said.

In addition to activities, Blackwell-Rodgers said that Steampunk/Victorian dress is encouraged.

“For men, it can be a dress shirt with a vest over top and a top hat,” he said. “For ladies, a longer dress or lace dress or even an old wedding dress. Layers are also big because they wore what they had.”

He added that cloaks are also traditional of the Steampunk era and can easily be picked up at any Halloween store.

The town of Jim Thorpe is also getting in on the event, Blackwell-Rodgers said, noting that on Nov. 1, 2 and 3, many of the shops will host special themes in their stores, while some restaurants will have special cocktails and deals.

“It’s going to be a fun weekend in the whole town,” he said.
