The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania will be hosting two historical events this weekend around the region.

On Saturday, in conjunction with The Bachmann House Players, representatives of the Lenape Nation will travel the route of the Walking Purchase, a land grab made by the sons of William Penn in 1737. The Walking Purchase Healing Journey will educate and raise awareness about what that treaty meant to the Native Americans who lived on that land.

“The Walking Purchase is in the consciousness of the people who live here in the Lehigh Valley,” the Bachmann Players’ artistic director Christopher Black said. “Many know of it, but there could and should be a better and deeper understanding. We can heighten that understanding, and bring an increased awareness of the cultural presence of The Lenape Nation in a spirit of learning and healing.”

The day will begin at 9 a.m. at the Wrightstown Quaker Meeting House in Wrightstown, making stops along the journey to do land healing ceremonies before concluding in Jim Thorpe on the site where the claim ended, now the Bond Farm along Route 903. Anyone is welcome to follow the caravan in their own vehicle or meet at any of the designated stops along the way.

At the Bond Farm, the re-enactors will perform a round or friendship dance.

On Sunday, the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania will host a “Return to Mauch Chunk” pow wow, beginning at 10 a.m. at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

The Bachman House Players will give a presentation at 11 a.m. and David White Elk Elmore will present Native flute playing and Woodlands social dance songs.

The grand entry of dancers will take place at noon and at 2:30 p.m., there will be a contemporary Native music concert by The Jim Beer Family Band.

Lead dancers for the event are Matthew White Eagle Clair and Chris Mourning Dove Clair. Host drum is Grey Cloud singers.

There will also be craft vendors available.

This event is family friendly. Visitors should bring either a blanket or chair to sit on.
