Free dinner

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is hosting its free community dinner tonight from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

All are welcome.

Eldred meeting

The Board of Supervisors for Eldred Township has two meetings monthly, the first and third Wednesday of the month.

The board is slated to meet at 7 tonight at the municipal building on Kunkletown Road.

Sub vets meet

The U.S. Submarine Veterans, Pocono Base, meets regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines, Pennsylvania. It is a local chapter of the national organization U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc.

Submarine veterans from all eras are encouraged to join. This month’s meeting will be at 7 tonight.

Bird ID tonight

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center and Pocono Avian Research Center have announced a program: Learn the Birds-Birding Identification Series.

Join Pocono Avian Research Center from 7 to 8:30 tonight to learn some new tricks or hone some old skills at identifying confusing fall warblers. All ages welcome. There is a cost, but EE Center members are free.

PVI PTO meets

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School PTO will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Lions meet

The Western Pocono Lions Club will meet Thursday at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville. The board will meet at 6 p.m. and the members can begin to order off the menu at 6:30 p.m. It is planned to begin the dinner meeting at 7 p.m.

WELL meeting

The West End Little League is having its open League meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Fall cleanup

Ross Township is holding its fall cleanup on two days, Friday and Saturday. It is being held at the rear of the municipal building on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg.

The hours for both days are 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

All aboard!

The Senior Centers of Monroe County, Including the Chestnuthill Center, will be meeting at the Mountain Center on Friday to go on a Steamtown trip.

At 9 a.m. it’s time for coffee and tea. Then at 11:30 it’s lunch and the Steamtown Museum.

At 1:15 p.m., the group will go on a train ride.

Next Wednesday, the group will be back at the Zion church location center in Brodheadsville and there will be an arts and crafts time, beginning at 10 a.m.

The light menu for that day is turkey club wrap, pea salad, apple/yogurt and whole grain bread.

The regular menu is meatloaf, butternut squash, succotash, sliced peaches and whole wheat bread.

Menu choices must be called in to the site director by 11 a.m. the day before at either 570-420-3735 or 570-242-6770.

CWU meets

Church Women United of Monroe County is holding a business meeting at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hughes Library in Stroudsburg in the community room.

Nominations for the 13th annual Margaret Wyckoff Wells Award are due.

A host church is needed for World Community Day, which usually is held the first Friday or Saturday in November. Attendees should check with their respective church to see if it is available.

Bingo returns

The West End Park and Open Space Commission will host Bingo Night at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

There will be specials, pull tabs and door prizes.

Ladies brunch

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, is having its ladies brunch on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. Those anticipating attending are asked to sign up and invite their girlfriends as well. The event is free.

Post cleanup

The American Legion Post 927 is holding its monthly cleanup day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

No tools need to be brought by helpers, just willingness and energy.

Security task force

Pocono Mountains Houses of Worship Security Task Force will be holding three training and informational workshops for those interested in topics related to church security.

Each workshop will be held at Effort UMC and last between two to three hours. Topics are: Fundamental of Church Security; How to Conduct a Church Security Audit; Greeters & Ushers Security Training; and Responding to Emergencies-Active Threat/Shooter.

These workshops are no cost. The workshops are scheduled as follows: Sept. 21, 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Oct. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; and Nov. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Motorcycle run

The seventh annual VALOR Harry Philips Motorcycle Run and Party begins at 10 a.m. Sunday with registration at Pocono Harley Davidson. The ride ends at the Gilbert American Legion with a family friendly party. There are costs associated with participation.

Fall festival

Salem UCC in Gilbert is holding its fall festival this Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. It will include baked goods and a basket raffle, as well as made-at-church baked apple dumplings.

Salem will also be involved in the Chestnuthill Community Day on Sept. 29.

Community supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting a community supper from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Polk Supervisors

The Polk Township Board of Supervisors meets the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the township municipal building in Kresgeville.

Knit & Crochet

The needle group (knitters and crocheters) meeting in Zion Lutheran Church’s Choir Room will gather once again at 1 p.m.

Newcomers are welcome. Teachers are on-site, as are supplies.

Lioness Meet

The Western Pocono Lioness will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville. The speaker will be from the American Cancer Society.

WE Republicans

The West End Republican Club meets regularly on the fourth Tuesday of each month at Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville. Republican-minded citizens are encouraged to join the group to socialize, listen, discuss and learn.

This month’s meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Those wishing to eat before the meeting, should arrive by 6 p.m.

PVEN needs

An email summarizing the activity at Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network from director Hope Christman indicates continued growth of people in need.

The center is averaging 264 families a month in the food pantry as compared to last year’s 219, and in the clothing closet the numbers went from 34 families a month in 2018 to 41 families a month this year.

Needed are men’s jeans, sweatpants/lounge pants and hoodies.

Preparing for winter is also on the agenda as the PVEN director states the network is now accepting adult winter coats and snow boots in all sizes.

The annual appeal letter will be coming to the community shortly.

Banned books

The Western Pocono Community Library will be hosting a Banned Books Week from Sept. 22-28, with a discussion of Ray Bradbury’s work “Fahrenheit 451” at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25.

Check the library’s selection of banned books and join the discussion about his work.

Deer program

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center and Pocono Avian Research Center have announced a whitetail deer program.

Due to the damage that whitetail deer can cause to landscaping efforts, Roger Spotts will present the program.

On Sept. 28, join the center coordinator at 10 a.m. for this look at the life of Pennsylvania whitetail deer. This one-hour indoor program will feature information on the deer’s biology, food habits and more. There is a cost, but center members can participate for free.

Community day

Chestnuthill Township is celebrating its community day on Sept. 29.

The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. at the Chestnuthill Park in Brodheadsville.

There will be demonstrations, entertainment, free food, basket raffle extravaganza and lots of information.

Among the many agencies expected to be present are: Operation: Touch of Home, three academies of dance, Effort UMC and Zion Lutheran Church

Volunteers sought

Eldred Township has an opportunity for residents to be most helpful. The Woods Trail through Mock Park is in need of some maintenance: raking, trimming and general tidying. The township is looking for a few volunteers to help with this task, either the last weekend of September or the first weekend of October, depending upon the availability of the volunteers.

Bog walks

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers guided weekly Tannersville Bog walks Wednesdays through Nov. 6, at 1 p.m.

These 2½-hour walks will be guided by an environmental educator from the center who will teach attendees about the bog, a unique boreal bog for this area, owned by the Nature Conservancy. The bog is filled with bird songs and interesting insect-eating plants.

Participants will meet at the bog parking lot by 10 a.m.
