Loose tire hits car on turnpike

A woman was injured Tuesday morning when traveling the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Carbon County.

Pennsylvania State Police — Pocono Station said the incident occurred at 11:10 a.m. as a 2011 Volvo S80 operated by Marc Magnotta, 50, of Forty Fort, Luzerne County, was traveling northbound in the right lane at the 73 mile marker when it lost its front driver’s side tire and rim.

The tire bounded over the center concrete barrier into the southbound lanes and struck a 2014 Mini Scooter Cooper operated by Denise Ogurkis, 50, of Harveys Lake, Luzerne County, which was southbound in the right lane, on the passenger side front windshield.

Ogurkis was treated at the scene and transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center with a suspected minor injury. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the incident.

Magnotta was not injured. He was also wearing his seat belt at the time of the incident.

A female motorist was injured Tuesday morning when traveling the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Carbon County. The crash occurred when a northbound car lost its front wheel at the 73 mile marker. The wheel crossed the roadway jumping the center concrete barrier before crashing through the windshield of the southbound car. The victim was treated at scene by Lehighton paramedics before being transported to a hospital trauma center. State police at Pocono are investigating the incident.
