Towamensing to lower speed near subdivision

A minor subdivision is prompting a speed change on an unposted road in Towamensing Township.

The township plans to draft an ordinance that would make the speed limit on Laurel Lane — located just off Hazelwood Road — to 35 mph, supervisors decided at their meeting on Thursday.

Township Engineer Greg Haas said that being an unposted road, the speed limit for Laurel Lane’s half mile-stretch is currently 55 mph. He noted that the project, submitted under the name Meisenhelder, proposes a driveway that, under the current speed limit, does not meet sight-distance requirements.

“It could be problematic,” he said of the current speed limit. “With a lower speed … there’s more perception time for somebody traveling approaching the driveway to stop.”

The subdivider’s engineer, Lehigh Engineering, completed the speed limit study, which found that the road’s speed limit needed to be reduced.

The Meisenhelder subdivision submitted plans with signatures at the township’s Thursday meeting. The project was given conditional approval pending the adoption of the sign posting by supervisors, which could happen as early as the next scheduled meeting in August.

Representatives for the subdivision were present at the meeting, but declined to comment.
