Man admits stealing from his grandmother to feed drug habit

A Carbon County man admitted on Monday afternoon to stealing from his grandmother to feed a drug habit.

Dane James Skrimcovsky, 33, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded guilty to one count of theft, admitting he took various jewelry items from his grandmother’s home and then sold them for money to support a drug habit.

Although he was charged for an Oct. 1, 2016, incident, he admitted taking jewelry from her at other times. The incident charged by borough police listed a loss of $1,451.

The victim did not seek restitution for the loss, according to Assistant District Attorney Seth Miller.

A family member said the woman also didn’t want Skrimcovsky to get any jail time. The relative, an uncle, said Skrimcovsky had gone through a drug rehabilitation program and continues to seek counseling.

Judge Steven R. Serfass rejected the request for a probation period, stating, “I can’t imagine what goes through a person’s mind to steal from his grandmother.”

Serfass sentenced him to serve one to one day less 24 months in prison. Skrimcovsky was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on drug or alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and render 100 hours of community service when paroled.

He will begin the prison term at 9 a.m. on July 22.
