Charges pending against man who crashed car into Hometown garage

Charges are pending against a man who crashed into a garage in Hometown Monday evening.

According to a press release by Rush Township police, John Pickens, 38, faces charges for the crash that occurred just after 5:30 p.m. on Monday at a home along Lafayette Avenue, Route 54.

Police say witnesses reported that Pickens attempted to flee the scene but was unsuccessful. He was also seen abusing inhalants at the time of the collision.

Further investigation identified Pickens as the operator of a vehicle that had also rear-ended another vehicle in the area of the 200 block of Claremont Avenue before the crash.

Pickens had fled that accident scene, and as he was fleeing drove through the front lawn of the home before crashing through the garage.

Pickens was not injured in the crash. No one inside the residence was injured.

Pickens was taken into custody, and submitted to a blood test at St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale. The investigation is continuing and charges will be filled at a later date.

The Rush Township Police Department was assisted by the Tamaqua Police Department, the Hometown Volunteer Fire Company 1, Hometown Fire Police, Tamaqua Ambulance, Lehighton Ambulance and Tamaqua Rescue.
