State police at Schuylkill Haven reported assisting the Hillside SPCA of Schuylkill County in an animal abuse investigation on Wednesday.

Troopers were called to assist the SPCA at a residence at 1488 Ridge Road, Upper Mahantongo Township, with a welfare check of animals.

Police discovered about 20 to 25 dogs were inside and outside the home along with several kittens.

All the dogs appeared to be malnourished and in poor health. A deceased dog and goat were also located on the property.

Troopers added that numerous donkeys and a goat were also observed outside the home and in poor physical condition. A search warrant was secured and served at which time the animals were removed from the property.

Troopers said the investigation is continuing. Troopers did not identify the owner of the property.
