School retirees chapter names volunteer of the year

The Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees in Carbon County presented its annual Volunteer of the Year Award recently at a luncheon at Dean Anthony’s in Jim Thorpe.

The recipient of the 2018 award is Warren Steigerwalt of Andreas. A retiree from the Carbon County Technical Institute, Steigerwalt has volunteered hundreds of hours to political, religious, social service and service to youth.

He received a certificate from the state organization and a pin to commemorate the honor.

The volunteer efforts of Kathy Merluzzi, co-chair of the social service committee, were also honored at the luncheon. The organization’s social service committee frequently visits and treats their members who have special needs or who are 90 and over. Merluzzi single-handedly made dozens of shawls for these special members. She was given a certificate of appreciation and flowers for all the hours she devoted to this project.

Merluzzi also frequently bakes cookies to treat the members who attend monthly PASR meetings.
