Write-ins earn spots on Thorpe area ballot

A person whose name did not appear on the Primary Election ballot in May defeated two candidates who were on the ballot.

This unusual occurrence happened in Kidder Township, where Nick Pantages received more write-in votes than the ballot votes collected by two others. He ended up winning three different nominations.

Here are results from the recent certification of write-in votes in the Jim Thorpe area by the Carbon County Board of Elections:

Kidder Township

Pantages was the big winner in Kidder Township’s balloting, winning three separate nominations, two of which are for the same race, meaning he is likely to win the position.

Pantages is likely to win the four-year term on the board, as he won the Democratic and Republican nominations.

There were two GOP candidates whose named appeared on the ballot for that nomination. Thomas LaFond collected 47 votes and Stephen D. Lilick tallied 22. But Pantages received 87 votes to defeat the filed candidates.

On the Democratic side, he tallied 39 write-in votes, 25 more than the 14 that Mary Farnschlader received.

He also won the Democratic nomination for a six-year term on the township’s board of supervisors, outpolling LaFond and Farnschlader in collecting write-ins.

Pantages received 24, LaFond, 12, and Farnschlader, 10.

As a result, he will face LaFond in November for the six-year term. LaFond was unopposed on the Republican ticket.

Jim Thorpe

Six people – three Democrats and three Republicans – will run for three four-year terms on the Jim Thorpe Borough Council after two people won Republican nominations via write-in votes.

On the Democratic side, filed candidates were Michael J. Yeastedt, Kyle J. Sheckler and Jay T. Miller, whereas only John T. McGuire appeared on the Republican slate. He will now be joined by Mary Shorten and Robert C. Shaninger, who won nominations with 35 and 33 write-in votes, respectively. Trailing them in that effort were Yeastedt, 20, Michael Rivkin, 17, and Sheckler, 13.

Penn Forest Township

In the only write-in vote initiative in Penn Forest Township, Joe Eremus Jr. won a Republican nomination for a six-year term on the township’s board of auditors. He received 11 write-in votes.
